An elderly neighbor of mine always says "pacific" instead of "specific". It hurts my ears every time I hear her say it.

Gah, "nucular." HATE. I think I experienced my first "The English language as I know it is actually disintegrating" moment when I found out that dictionaries were actually starting to include "nucular" as an acceptible pronunciation substitute for "nuclear." NO, Merriam-Webster. The fact that the president of the United States happens to pronounce it that way it does not make it okay.

I find it crazy-making when someone "axes" me to "esplain" something, like why people protest "nucular" power plants.

The one that always drives me up the wall is the use of "step foot" instead of "set foot," as in "I'll never step foot in that building again!" I have to stop and wave my arms with frustration every time I hear it.

earworm alert, indeed. Although I actually thought first not of "Funkytown" but Steely Dan's "Barrytown". Of course NOW I can't get "Funkytown" out of my head.

You're not imagining it, arby--you really are in an alternate universe. Then you come here. Wordietown is real. :-)

I just had someone get confused between secession and succession. I guess that's fairly common, but it still drives me batshit.

I know, isn't it sad? Sometimes I feel like I'm in an alternate universe where I'm the only one who can spell! And then I come here and remember there are others like me.

I always typed it as "ax" (and used to tell these temps that were making calls that when they said, "I want to ax you something" it wasn't like they would be chasing after the people to be surveyed with an axe!) but I never thought of it as "aks" and maybe somehow it originated as a typo??

But yeah, that drives me crazy!!!

How about the highly cringeworthy substitute for "all of a sudden"--all the sudden?
