When I'm back, I will have a long weekend for Labor Day. I'd like to go somewhere in the US, some place where I can rent a car for a couple days and explore unusual landscapes. I was thinking about South Florida and Key West. Any alternative suggestion or personal recommendation? (Not necessarily requiring cars)

How about the hills singing songs for a thousand years? That sounds pretty creepy--and annoying too. Imagine trying to get a good night's rest, and the damn hills are singing. What do you do—call the cops?

It's not far--less than three hours by car (if you're not stuck in traffic). Beautiful area, too--the Brandywine Valley. Lots of history there. :-)

Edit: Which reminded me--Princeton, NJ and New Hope, PA are two great places to visit (although New Hope has become much more "touristy" and less peaceful these days...).

It's possible to tour West Point (Military Academy) ( West Point

and the C.I.A. (Culinary Institute of America) ( CIA visitors

Both are worthwhile.

I will let someone with local knowledge of Philadelphia make suggestions about its particular charms.

The Roosevelt Mansion in Hyde Park, just north of Poughkeepsie. Accessible by train - about 90 miles from NYC. FDR home
Fun, scenic, AND educational.
