There are 17576 different sequences of three letters (26 x 26 x 26). How many of them occur in words? General rules of engagement: mononyms only, lower case preferred to upper case, short preferred to long, common preferred to rare. So if you don't recognize the word, the sequence is probably rare, and no better representative was available.

I haven't used invented names of corporations or products (e.g, "Maxzide" for "axz"), unless they've taken on a life of their own (e.g., "mapquest" for "apq"). "Aasvogels" is used for "asv" because "aasvogel" was used for "aas" and a word can't appear twice on a Wordnik list.

Sequences not found so far: acx, adx, agx, ahx, ajq, ajx, apx, aqh, aqj, aqk, aqx, avq, axq, axz, azx.

  • mollusque Ruzuzu, this is frightening. I don't have a three-to-make-four list, but On with their heads! is similar, with the corresponding tag behead.

  • ruzuzu I think I see--I suppose it would be tempting to tag both aas and aasvogel with the a-a-s tag, and that wouldn't actually save any time. (Ah--but if one could just stick to the "meaningful" three-letter words (those acceptable in Scrabble, of course), that would mean helpful tags for all the threes, their three-to-make-four hooks, and every other word that could be played off of them.)

  • mollusque Tagging wouldn't give a way to see how many of the sequences are represented in at least one word. I do sometimes tag all the words that contain an interesting rare sequence such as abc. Mar 10, 2011

  • ruzuzu I'm sure you've already considered this, but could you just tag the sequences for the ones that are over three letters? If words such as aasvogel could have more than one tag, then you wouldn't need to list all 17576 variations... unless you want to... which would be astounding and amazing and entirely consistent with your other lists. :-) Mar 9, 2011

  • mollusque Thanks, ruzuzu. I stopped at "b" when I realized I'd skipped a couple of obvious sequences, like "ady" and "aff". I haven't had a chance to rebuild the list yet, which unfortunately involves deleting or moving and then readding each word, in order to insert the missing ones in order. Mar 9, 2011
