Cultural Anthroplogist from Germany (still)living in rainy Wales. Yes, I like this saying: You live a new life for every language you speak. --Czech proverb.

I have studies Chomsky, too - Transformational Grammar. Enjoyed it! "Transformation" can give the impression that theories of transformational generative grammar are intended as a model for the processes through which the human mind constructs and understands sentences.

X NP AUX Y \Rightarrow X AUX NP Y

(where NP = Noun Phrase and AUX = Auxiliary)

  • about 8 months ago, bilby said: I could defend Chomsky at length, but really Wordie is not the right place to debate politics. There is plenty about him on the internet so by all means have a look if you can be bothered. He of course is also an accomplished linguist and perhaps deserving of a place in the pantheon alongside Saussure and the rest.
But I don't wish to clutter up your profile with piffle! I'm enjoying your contributions to Wordie so keep at it!

I've been to Machynlleth, and not only that, I can pronounce it too. I just got back from visiting various family in North Wales actually. Aberystwyth is nice isn't it, though it always feels a bit like the end of the world to me.
  • about 8 months ago, nuxiy said: I think Nettbys is talking about Chomsky, not Kerry. Chomsky has expressed sympathy towards anarcho-syndicalism, but I wouldnt call him "Anti-American". Anti-capitalism, though...
  • about 8 months ago, chained_bear said: I hate to interrupt the conversation, but I don't believe John Kerry espouses "Anti-Americanism," and it is certainly not "central to his worldview," so not sure where you read that (likely someone on the opposite end of the political spectrum--Republican Party, perhaps?). And Chomsky is generally viewed to be far to the left (if that helps any). :)

I really do not know much about Chomsky’s political orientation.

I have just read a little bit about a support for John Kerry - but I do not know. Anti-Americanism is central to his worldview. I have also just read this. I do not like it. To me, all people everywhere are equal. I do not understand enough yet.
I only enjoy his linguistic theories. Does this answer your question?

  • about 8 months ago, bilby said: I took some good (I think) photos that day, what with one hand clutching the steering wheel and the other my poor underfed stomach! Eventually I managed to find a (Pakistani) store open and bought some cold food :-) But I thought Wales was a marvellous and spectacular place in many ways so I hope I can go back there soon. Thanks for the offer, B.
  • about 8 months ago, nettys said: Thank you, dear Bilby. Yes, food and drink to get - this can be a bit of a problem in Wales. If I had known you then I would have cooked you a meal. You could have called with us in Machynlleth! We love visitors - from everywhere!! I like the Welsh mountains - Snowdonia. In Aberystwyth there is a great shop called Pollys - they sell individual clothes. I wonder which pub you went to in Aber?!! I love Cardiff. It is a nice capital.

I will add more Welsh words - promised. I am fluent yn yr iaith.
    Hwyl nawr, Annette

Actually I stopped for lunch, although there was no lunch to be had :-( At a pub, a man told me he would be happy to sell me a 'Christmas drink' (measured in pints, it seemed) but no food. As if that were somehow wrong. But Wales remains something of a fascination for me. I hope you'll add some Welsh words if you can. Wordie loves words!

I just love words - in many languages!
@having: a precoffee / Vorkaffee now, i.e.that's a coffee before the breakfast coffee whilst getting ready.

    Hwyl!
