Ask me. I'm only an illusion so you will get the answers you deserve for confusing the real with the imaginary. "I plucke up the goodlie greene herbes of sentences by pruning, eat them by reading, chawe them by musing, and laie them up at length in the hie seate of memorie by gathering them together; that I, having tasted the sweetenes, I may the lesse perceave the bitternes of this miserable life." - note written in Elizabeth I's copy of the Epistles of St Paul, August 1576 or after. Not known if the old prune wrote it herself.

It's a very formal and strange-sounding term for "re-assigning to the demanio" (link). I don't know what decommissioning means, but it sounds more like something involving the end of service - which is not what demaniazione would involve.
  • 4 months ago mruchennaaguoji said
Maybe. Maybe if you asked me nicely, I might consider promising or merely stating that I will comment on your profile with the utmost infrequency. However, as I can not see you, hear you, touch you, smell you or taste you I will proceed to make one comment that will subsequently be followed by others with the utmost infrequency.
Given that the *nym variable should enable for idiosyncrasies, an autoantonym is simply a self-acknowledged hypocrite. So I ask the following: Do you seek us all? For surely you do not aim to destroy the world!

This is the downside of 'private' profiles. You have a conversation where half is on one profile and half on the other, then the other lameness makes his/her profile private and the complete conversation is then gone from the public record. And you end up with snippets that don't really reflect the cut and thrust of the exchange...once upon a time I could delete shit from my profile page but that's not the case any more.

I'm going to our local vegan fast food place tonight for the Philly "chick'n cheeze-steak" with vegenaise and a side of peanut oil fried fries. Nothing like really greasy, totally overpriced, vegan counter food when you're starving. :)

  • about 1 year ago yarb said
If it helps with the census-taking, I'm 100% non-vegan, and 90% eggs and milk. I think a good chef ought to be able to satisfy vegetarian customers, although that's entirely the chef's prerogative. A chef may very well decide to exclude people who don't like his/her style of food: that's the nature of the restaurant business. People who don't like Indian food shouldn't go to Indian restaurants, people who don't like nudity should avoid nude beaches, and people who don't like meat should stay away from places with minimal or no veggie options. Isn't it obvious?
  • about 1 year ago arcadia said
With all the recent vegan-esque entries, I'm lost as to who else is vegan around here now. Any hints?

Oh yes, and I totally agree with your comment that it's BS when chefs make a big deal over cooking vegan meals. Sometimes I suspect omnivores just feel judged by the very existence of vegans and lash out accordingly, even if unprovoked.

    Oh Dear.

We appear to have had a HILARIOUS MISUNDERSTANDING, such as sometimes happens on the interwebs. Because, when I checked the location of the mysterious PO Box in question on google maps, and found it happened to be situated right at the intersection of FOX Crescent, I thought for sure you were just taking the mickey out of me. Because I am by nature suspicious.

Oh well. Perhaps we can arrange visitation rights.

mea culpa. I am an idiotic, untrusting wretch.

And so 'tis done. Elsie stays on in Madrid with the charming Alex, with whom she can practice her French. The other animals were placed in their new home this evening (with a little cache of Jelly Bellys as an incentive).

The new foster parents expressed a little reluctance when it came to the less attractive animals, but were cooperative when I made it clear that it was an all-or- nothing deal.

I just hope you won't torment yourself in later life about the unique opportunity that you missed. Right now you could be chowing down on your lambchop (well, I guess not a lambchop, maybe a yummy ratatouille) under the soothingly baleful glare of Melmoth.

I guess you can always visit them on Flickr.

    Dear Bilby:

Boris has told me that he would be honored to be the subject of an entry in your wee poetry zine. He and I discussed potential choices of pseudonym - he favored Ern Malley, but I told him I thought that might already have been used.

So I guess we should stick with my real name, or my blogger name.

I guess we can discuss details of the extensive antipodean book tour later. Boris has a definite liking for Fancy Feast. Myself, not so much.

    Yours,

    Foxy.

    Dear Bilby:

I hope you understand the lengths to which we are prepared to go to keep you regaled with diorama hilarity each weekend. At this point a transatlantic team is working round the clock to ensure no interruption in the planned diorama appearance schedule. Herewith an excerpt from a communication from one of my crack stateside animal wranglers:

a total of 5 animals and their poop bags have arrived. the *****'s packaging was damaged but he and his load, as it were, are fine, I've used some packing tape to secure him into his package. I've received my first pooping animal newsletter from this fine company and hope my clicking 'unsubscribe' did the trick. If I start getting animal sex spam, we'll know it's your fetish what done it, not the innocent vacas de Madrid.

When she writes "your fetish", of course, we know that it's your fetish she is really referring to. I am just the middleman here.

    Warmly,

    zorrito

Spirit Guide - I understand that this site is about sharing words, but the overall objective is unclear. I appreciate that a dictatorial usage policy on behalf of the site creators would reduce it's enjoyability but find the whole thing somewhat confusing. Do you just list words you like, or have something to say about? To what extent do people interact on here? Any general etiquette tips from the perspective of someone more familiar with 'flickr without the pictures' would be appreciated. I'm not so concerned with impressing people as not looking like a bozo.

Greetings all. It's past 3am and this will be my 10,000th comment on Wordie. As it's patently obvious I don't have a life, although I certainly have a pouch and that is the subject of MUCH ENVY, I shall devote this comment to my Wordie friends:
Sionnach - a miserable creature, my best friend. Doesn't somebody have a list for six-word stories? Although at first I was flustered by the fluff-tailed gaucho, I have since learned to co-exist with carnivorous, sheep-fetish obnoxion. I love him more than he will ever know. Because he ate me first.
Reesetee - a companion, comrade and goofball in all moments. True.
Chained_bear - I am happy when the bear is happy: we have shared poo. Is there a greater cause?
Uselessness - A pioneer. Perhaps your style influences me. Guthrie on Dylan? Pigeon on lamp-post? Tough call.
Dontcry - *hugs* *more hugs* *some tears for my 4 stillborn siblings*
Prolagus - Grande, grande. Prolagus is grand. Top pumpkin Flickr multilingual oblique humour dude par excellence,
Whichbe - A treasure, a chuckle that flits across a stormy sky. You are so talented.
She - She, somewhere, perfect for her perfect while.
Frogapplause - We were birthed together in the Universe of Souls.
    Pterodactyl - Sublime and worthy.
Mollusque - I can't imagine Wordie without you. At all. Though your nick lacks 2 vowels, I won't hold it against you.
Plethora - Without Wordie I would never have met you. I salute your honesty, your endeavour, your startling self-reflection.
Oroboros - Your lists are superb. Without them I would have lost interest long ago.
SonOfGroucho - Sorely missed in recent times.
Trivet - Leaves little gems all over the place.
Asativum - A friend and brother.
John - John, John, what have you done here? Your forebearance begs legend.
Frindley - So knowledgeable in so many ways, I'm tempted to search for Frindleypedia.
Kewpid - A thoughtful trooper with many excellent contributions.
Pomegranate - A favourite fruit, always.
Skipvia - Offers glimpses of another life. Fascinating and 'childish' in the best kind of way.
Sarra - One day I'll make tea for you. Vegetarian tea ;-)
VanishedOne - A gentleman and a scholar, excelling at both.
Rolig - Hardy and thoughtful. I can't remember any Wordie who consistently puts as much effort into comments as you.
Lampbane - Pop-culture junkie, always interesting in a defiantly tangential way.
Fbharjo - I don't understand your words or comments. At all. This is becoming a kind of fascination for me.
Slumry - Come back. You know there's no life after Wordie.
Colleen - A leader in many ways. You inspired me to my first comment. That was a fair while ago. I'm always pleased when you drop in from time to time.
Yarb - Funny, perceptive, irreverent and downright unhelpful. This is the ultimate compliment.
Gangerh - A fun-loving guy who put up with a lot of my nonsene. I dips me lid.
Acoustics - The fact that 'Pretty Dots All In A Row' has such longevity is testimony to you, indeed to all 'lesser' Wordies, of your perceptiveness. Capital!
Qroqqa - A craftsman whose posts are always well-considered. Much have I to learn.
Palooka - I have great respect for you and your lists are a source of constant joy and sustenance. If I could change my nick to palooka-bilby in your honour, I would.
all the rest - sorry if you're not on this list :-( It is my fault, and entirely my fault, that I have yet to know you 'in person'.
    Send all complaints to palin@president.org

I'm really enjoying the poetry citations Bilby, keep them coming.
  • almost 2 years ago bilby said
I've posted quite a few citations today of 'old fashioned' poetry. Predictably they come from a book published in 1957 (no, I'm not that old!) which I picked up at a lawn sale last week for 20 cents. It is 'Favorite Poems Old And New', Selected For Boys And Girls By Helen Ferris. But it's the sort of compilation that was collecting dead insects in the musty corners of the library when I was a lad. These books, too twee by half for modern for modern tastes, are being jettisoned freely. The copy I picked up in fact bears a stamp which shows it was once the property of the Library Service of Western Australia. I'm quite against libraries indulging in rampant shelf-clearing of 'outdated' books simply because they feel they don't have enough space to keep them. These books are part of our heritage and there is certainly appreciable merit in the verse they contain. While I appreciate there may be a demand for a lending section of Nintendo video games, I also contend that libraries should continue to fulfil their role as repositories of culturally significant material.

Lyrics of a song I'm working on:

Well the guns went off in my memory
When I traced the lines of your face
    Seeing claws of angel desire
    Senseless, careless grace

    A sunset howled behind me
    In colours I couldn't explain
I cried your name a thousand times
    A desert begging rain

What visions remain when you wake up?
    What dreams encircle your head?
What knowledge has stubbornly passed you by
To be lost in time instead?

I sit on an endless foreshore
    Swallows are marking my grave
Follow their trail to the door of faith
    Of an unbidden slave

    Goodnight, dear friends, goodnight.
