After reading several bad books, I had the idea to write my own. As I started to write, I found myself analyzing the books I really do like and why I like them. It wasn't necessarily the subject matter or the plot. It turns out most of the time the plot was actually pretty lame. It was the way they write which attracted me to them. I realized my vocabulary needed expansion. (I was a math/ comp sci major and my literary skills were definitely lacking.) so now I'm collecting words as well as phrases to try to write my own thesaurus. Why a thesaurus? English is a weird language. (http://blog.leximo.org/2009/03/verbing-weirds-language.html) It is not, by any means, consistent. There are rules but they are vague just the like most of the definitions of words. There is too much of everything. Most of the lists I create here will be intended to help organize words or phrases as a reference. Some of my favorite authors are: GB Shaw, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaimen. |
