From meadow-pipit to sandy laverock, I've just (p.m. 9/1/10) added some not-previously-listed common names of birds that you might find of interest - ;>)

Wait--knots are birds? Is that the inspiration behind Knots Landing?
  • 3 days ago fbharjo said
Not in ligate literature, for sure!
  • 3 days ago reesetee said
Now you guys are just being knotty.

True Lover's Knot (Lycophotia porphyrea) is the common name of a species of European noctuid moth that covers a couple of your bases: knots (in cordage), and birds "knot".

H, what a great story, and how nice of you to think of me when you heard it. :-) My guess is that the captain probably knows more knots than he knows what to do with!

R, thanks for the 8/9/10 greeting. Happy...uh, well, not-unlucky Friday the 13th back to you!

I did some tree and boat work for an 80+ year-old retired boat captain this past week. He had great fun telling me how he once stumped some marine shop folks by asking them to create an eye-splice in a left-laid rope. He had to show them how (they'd only done it for right-laid ropes) while others in the shop fixed the mechanical problem he'd gone to the shop for. During the telling, I thought, "Reese Tee would love to hear this story." He (we) made great use of the clove hitch and while we were lashing and dragging chain-sawed logs around with his tractor.

I do recall your knots list. I infrequently give used copies of Ashley's Book of Knots as gifts.
  • about 1 month ago hernesheir said
Thanks for your contributions to the handy words list!
  • about 1 month ago ruzuzu said
It seemed as if it would make a good list, but in that it's too good to be true, every potential list is an existing list kind of way. I figured you'd be the one to ask... :-)

Either way, I just made a bird birds list. Thanks, treeeees! (And thanks, hernesheir!)
  • about 1 month ago reesetee said
All birds welcome here, hernesheir. :-)
  • about 1 month ago hernesheir said
Sorry if my confusing comment sounded like that of a yardbird, which my father was content to call me when I was young. For recompense: tropicbird.
  • about 1 month ago reesetee said
Wait. Now I'm confused. Ruzuzu, are you asking whether any Wordnik lists exist? Or are you looking for references to create a list?

Either way, it's a good idea for a list, even if it's been done before. (I, for one, haven't done such a list.)
  • about 1 month ago ruzuzu said
Oh, wait a second - hernesheir, are you suggesting that the definition of "Zuzu" is "'bird birds' for a list of bird words?" (Because that would be awesome.)
  • about 1 month ago ruzuzu said
Thank you, hernesheir. Yes. Bird birds.
  • about 1 month ago hernesheir said
Zuzu means "bird birds" for a list of bird words.
  • about 1 month ago ruzuzu said
Do you know of any lists of birds that have "bird" in their names (blackbird, bluebird, &c.)?
  • 2 months ago hernesheir said
I link to your nice bad guys list on my perponyms list. Thanks for bringing your list to my attention.

Thanks also for contributing to the BigWords list. Many of the terms on that list are very useful and quite specific. Others, not so much.

Edit: oh, did you happen to delete them, just when I entered a new one?
  • 9 months ago reesetee said
Yep! I'll get it started and add both of you as contributors. Anyone else interested?

Hi, to screen my Grandiloquent Dictionary list for misspellings I wrote a script that searches each word's page for "misspell". When running the word through OED I had to decide whether or not I wanted to count these alternative spellings as misspelling. I decided in favor of that approach for in the OED page of these words, they are indicated thus: "query_type=misspelling". So I don't necessarily see misspelling and variant spelling as contradictory. What do you think?

OH MY GOD! reesetee! I just processed your explanation about citations! I didn't really comprehend what you meant about the little icon buttons under the words. I have been having the best time amusing myself with citations over the last few days...only to have the unsettling understanding dawn upon my vacant wilderness of a brain this minute that my efforts have most probably been a ludicrous and obnoxious thing to do...not to mention entirely redundant.
I feel like I walked out of the ladies' room with my skirt tucked up in my pantihose! Oh, well...

Thank you, reesetee for explaining "citation". I love this place!
  • over 2 years ago treeseed said
    Hi reesetee,
I am unsure of what is actually meant by a "citation"...sometimes I see words on here that have no definition or notes and of course many of them I can easily find in a dictionary...so is that what a citation is...a definition from a reliable source? What is the proper way to make a citation?
    Thank you, from newbie Treeseed.

Don't we all?! A few new ones on my Under The Kilt list after I spent a few hours picking the brains of the hostel manager. Be good :-)

Not at all, SoG. I have a mini-zoo of finches. It's better than watching TV. :-)

I see you mention your birds, reestee. What birds do you have, if you don't mind me asking?
  • almost 3 years ago reesetee said
Thanks, cakemix! I switched it from squarehead, another favorite. :-)

Hi reesatee, thanks for having the courage to notify me that I was raping the use of the site with my tags. The horrors are now undone.

Thanks, all! Do I have to retire and/or go to Disney? I wouldn't mind the former, but I'd prefer not to do the latter. As for crashing the server, I assume John will let me know if it ever comes to that! *fingers crossed*
  • almost 3 years ago papageno said
Yay! Quite a benchmark, reesetee! Surprised you haven't crashed the server yet.
  • almost 3 years ago sonofgroucho said
Congratulations on reaching 10,000 words, reesetee. Are you going to retire now?
  • almost 3 years ago oroboros said
My goodness reesetee, 10K! It's a little like layin' in firewood innit? Eventually you'll have more than you can ever burn and Beelzebub will be tappin' your stash for the fires of hell!!!

Reesetee: congratulations on reaching 10,000 woids!! What will you do now? Visit Disneyland? You deserve it.

HAHA! There it is, on my profile! Now any time I want that earworm in my head, especially around...say...November 1, I'll know just where to find it!

I can't thank you enough, c_b. Really. But wait 'til next year.
  • almost 3 years ago chained_bear said
Hey Reesetee.... You know what today is, don't you? All Saints' Day!

(*singing*) FOR ALL THE SAINTS, WHO FROM THEIR LABOURS RESSSSST...
  • almost 3 years ago reesetee said
Hey, thanks, c_b! I don't know why I didn't see your comment until now. :-)

Had never heard of this bird, but when I went searching for info, I found out that it's apparently a localized term for white-winged scoter. Still, it's worth adding, don't you think?
  • almost 3 years ago chained_bear said
Found another bird wird! Don't know if you have it already, or on which list:

brass wing(ed) diver, a.k.a. Eastern white-winged scoter (Newfoundland English), Melanitta deglandi deglandi. Ca. 1785.

Astute? Three out of eight? Naaaah. But thanks for the...er...trophy, uselessness! I'll display it, all right. ;->
  • almost 3 years ago uselessness said
You have emerged victorious from Identify the Wordie. You are an astute observer of people on the internet! I mean that in a good way! Make sure to come back for the next game so you can retain your title, champion.

This comment is your trophy. Display it with love for all the world to see.

Thank you, thank you! I figured it was best to start off that way, instead of wait until later. I've only been here a few times, but this site is going to become my new obsession. -grin-

No need to apologize--completely understood. :-)

Just wanted to apologize in case my comments on rhythm belcher came out the wrong way. You weren't the one I was worried about. :)

Okay, Facebook's kinda tricky to link to here, because it doesn't use regular usernames. You need to go to your profile page and look at the URL. At the end of it you'll see "id=12345678" ...just copy that ID number and paste it here on your Wordie profile for the link to work right.

And hurry up already, I want to add you as my friend! ;-)
  • about 3 years ago reesetee said
Thanks, Ecrivaine. I'm not very active on those two sites...yet. :-) Most of my free time is swallowed up by Wordie!

    Oh, okay--and BookMooch.
  • about 3 years ago ecrivaine33 said
I also added you and sent an invite on LibraryThing. Have a good one. I'm Ecrivaine32 on that site.

    I'm on Blinklist as Ecrivaine32

Looks like you just got started on Blinklist. Feel free to scoop from my over 21,000 links (currently). And thanks for the comment on Wordie.

Reesetee is an outstanding word-collector, a good guy & an extraordinary and intelligent asset to Wordie! We need more reesetees!

You are prescient--I am addicted. Uh-oh!
  • about 3 years ago reesetee said
Trust me--you'll become addicted before too long! :-)
  • about 3 years ago slumry said
Thanks again. I did delete the repetition, but I kind of enjoyed it while it lasted. I liked what you said about the fact everyone uses this site in a unique way--I have gone from "Huh?" to seeing lots of possibilities in 24 hours--and all because Librarything has been down!
  • about 3 years ago slumry said
Thanks for the welcome. I am starting to see the possibilities here.

Can't be all that enormous if *I* didn't notice it.... ;-)

I really enjoy the fact that everyone uses this site differently. Me, I collect words like pebbles. I see one on the ground and I have to pick it up, look at it, and then stuff it in my pocket with a zillion other words. I'll dump 'em all out when I get home and probably save most of them. Other Wordies thread a few really wonderful words onto a necklace as though they were jewels--not a lot, but dazzling to see. Some pick up the curiosities, beautiful, ugly, or otherwise, and place them on display for others to marvel. Then there are those Wordies who have studios where they invent their own creations. And on and on.

    Gotta love it....
  • over 3 years ago uselessness said
Reesetee has an enormous e- ...uh, nevermind. As much as I love hanging around this site and commenting and stuff, I really don't add new words too often. A lot of the time, I'll add a new word just to leave a definition or comment on it, then remove it from my list because I don't have a need for it. Weird.
  • over 3 years ago reesetee said
Whaaaa?? I wasn't even paying attention! Holy Word Monster, Batman! Geez, I hope John has lots and lots of storage room....

Actually, now that you mention it, I've been trying to sort through some of my (unbelievably) long lists and break them down into shorter ones--hence the Foodie list. As always, a work in progress.
  • over 3 years ago jennarenn said
Dang! I just noticed that you've topped 5,000 during my sabbatical. Where do you keep them all? What are we going to do when you get to 10,000?
  • over 3 years ago jennarenn said
    Hey reesetee,

Check out WordPlay's profile. It's a game that uselessness and I have created for wordies. Round one starts at 1pm EST today.
