I take major umbrage at that suggestion, c_b. But, in fact, the comments do show up in my e-mail.

Thank you all for your kind remarks. I'm not sure what precipitated yesterday's outburst, but I have resolved to stick around and try to participate more.

In fact, it must be time to start a new list. And somebody needs to take a flight down under to give bilby some remedial spelling and grammar lessons.

And yes, c_b, I am indeed old. Practically ancient, in fact. Though I have yet to master the steps required to prepare the magical, mystical dublin coddle.

I have different reasons to ruzuzu but end result is the same: I wish you would stay a while. Like you I don't find the site very usable, and the spam's a pain, and fundamentally the splitting of 'words' into two pages is not working very coherently, etc. etc. etc., but maybe my tether is longer out here in the desert. There's still fun to be had. It'd be funner with you here. You're mature enough to know you're own head so I'm not going to plead. But you certainly can't leave without a sloppy kiss first, oh no!
  • about 1 month ago ruzuzu said:
When the switch first happened, I was very sad. I had just discovered Wordie, and I was completely in love--it didn't matter that some of the comments I was reading were two years old. In fact, that made it even more compelling--stuff I'd just found out about was stuff that you and chained_bear and bilby had been sharing for, well, for years... and then there were things you were joking about that I hadn't learned yet. When The Change came, the main difference for me was not the layout and missing features so much as the missing voices. I continue to read through old comments, and I'm still smitten--even though Wordnik is not the Wordie I fell in love with. But the prospect of losing another voice now, when I've had more time to become keenly aware of how important those voices are, is the part of all of this change that could actually break my heart. I will eventually run out of old comments to read, but I won't run out of the longing to hear what you have to tell us--that would just get worse over time. Please don't go.

  • 3 months ago john said:
Hi sionnach, the default sort for lists is 'order added', so seeing words from across the alphabet on any page is expected behavior. I just paged through all three pages of the list you mentioned, sorted by alpha and order added, and they look ok to me. Email me if you're seeing something different.

Onelook and friends still there, but the location has changed. If you look at the summary page for any word, in the 'Definitions' area, underneath 'WordNet' there's a section called 'Elsewhere on the web.'

Thanks, John. It's a bit of a random thing. In trying to track the phenomenon, I had the impression that it might be a result of having two Firefox windows open simultaneously (which I usually avoid, but sometimes a second window opens up as a popunder ad). This doesn't explain things completely though, but it has been less of an issue to date. I am able to delete duplicate words and comments, but a couple of lists appear twice on my list of lists, which is a minor annoyance.

Not to worry, though. I still need my daily fix of Wordie.

Oh foxy boy... Would you happen to have any idea or indication of the date of that suit of armor in the Flickr photo you linked to on solleret? *curiouser*

Also, you may find this intriguing. Note that it is $79.95, but it is also sold out. ?! (Psst... Amazon has them for $24.98.)

And this page was obviously MADE for you.

I can make no promises. Usually Sunday evening (Madrid time) is a good time to check for diorama updates. But my friend Brad is visiting this week, and we do have a day-trip to Segovia planned for tomorrow. A lot may depend on how interesting the museo de brujería (museum of witchcraft) turns out to be.
Then there are today's mad cow photos to upload to Flickr (it was a 19-cow afternoon, so it could take a while).
But I will certainly try my best.

Sionnach, I just read your Wilbur Chronicles. The first one was so hilarious and well written that I couldn't help but continue on to the next chapter and the next... This is both good and bad. Good since I laughed my little noggin off, but bad since I was supposed to be writing a paper on probabilistic modeling techniques, due tomorrow, ack! However, upon discovering that you are a statistician, I put all guilt aside and simply enjoyed the moment: after all, it was technically somewhat, sort of, slightly related, in a Wilbur kind of way :)

¡Paciencia, zorrito! It may take some time to summon the requisite landing craft ... all our crocodiles are currently deployed against a nasty outbreak of Swedish sunbathers along the north coast here. Meanwhile, remember the pre-arranged codes. Flower-pot on balcony: we meet in the car park. Calzoncillos on the tv antenna: do not disturb. A man walks past your window sportng a grey overcoat, woollen scarf and groaning umbrella: it's nasty outside, dress warm or stay the hell in.

Sionnach enjoys: foreign languages, Gilbert and Sullivan, lemon meringue pie, teasing and being teased by bilby, Wordie and goodreads.com.
Sionnach is neutral about: walking on the beach, the Oscars, large chain bookstores.
Sionnach actively dislikes: sports metaphors, the Superbowl, rabid right-wing radio hosts, internet hostility.
Sionnach is saddened by: the suicide of David Foster Wallace, the overall tendency of internet debate to devolve into crass name-calling, Iceland's bankruptcy.
Sionnach is grateful for: Wordie and its many fine Wordizens. (Sionnach doesn't want to offend by singling anyone out, but feels obliged to give a shout-out to a certain wretched antipodean non-placental mammal with large leathery ears).
Sionnach is tired of: speaking in the third person.
