  • This mosquito is present here and at one time in north Australia we had endemic malaria. Through good management - hats off - we no longer have malaria although a close watch is kept on incoming travellers as potentially an infected person could kick off an epidemic.

The Health Department has a reasonably solid entomology section which keeps a watch on mosquito populations, particularly around urban areas. At one time I was employed as an interpreter under the co-operative program with Nusatenggara Timur in Indonesia. Hence Chief Entomologist Peter Whelan and I found ourselves going around the fringe urban swamps of Kupang in West Timor taking water samples and then inspecting the mosquito larvae samples in the lab. The locals were very impressed with a bit of equipment Peter had brought with him, a long handled tool made of stainless steel that was perfect for lifting a water sample from brackish pools without getting yourself into it.

Local: I'd love to have one of those.

    PW: What?

Local: That. Your water scooper. It's an excellent piece of equipment. Where did you get it?

PW: The supermarket. It's a soup ladle.
