  1. A title, originally a surname of the Julian family at Rome, which, after being dignified in the person of the dictator C. Julius Cæsar, was assumed by successive Roman emperors, and finally came to be applied to the heir presumptive to the throne, in the same manner as Augustus was added as a title to the name of the reigning emperor. The title was perpetuated in the Kaiser of the Holy Roman Empire, a dignity first assumed by Charlemagne.
  2. Hence A dictator; a conqueror; an emperor; an absolute monarch. And she shall be sole victress, Cæsar's Cæsar. Shak., Rich. III., iv. 4.
  3. To imitate Cæsar; assume dictatorial or imperial power. [Rare.]
