Galictis

I once surprised a weasel (Galictis barbara) in the act of removing her young, or conducting them, rather; and when she was forced to quit them, although still keeping close by, and uttering the most piercing cries of anger and solicitude, the young continued piteously crying out in their shrill voices and moving about in circles, without making the slightest attempt to escape, or to conceal themselves, as young birds do.

One, the Galictis barbara, is a large bold animal that hunts in companies; and when these long-bodied creatures sit up erect, glaring with beady eyes, grinning and chattering at the passer-by, they look like little friars in black robes and grey cowls; but the expression on their round faces is malignant and bloodthirsty beyond anything in nature, and it would perhaps be more decent to liken them to devils rather than to humans.

Although according to CONABIO black-handed spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), tayra (Eira barbara), greater grisón (Galictis vittata), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), nutria (Lutra longicaudis), jaguar (Panthera onca), puma (Puma concolor) and Baird's Tapir (Tapirus bairdii) do live in this ecoregion.

Among the fauna we find great herbivores such as the pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus celer) and the guanaco (Lama guanicoe), carnivores such as the puma (Felis concolor), Geoffroy's cat (Felis geoffroyi), pampa fox (Dusicyon gymnocercus), zorrino común (Conepatus chinga) and grison (Galictis cuja).

Among some of the endangered mammals found in this ecoregion are the jaguar (Panthera onca), puma (Felis concolor), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), tapir (Tapirus bairdii), greater grison (Galictis vittata), tayra (Eira barbara), Central American spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), and mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata).
