Nototrema

In the South American tree-frogs called Nototrema there is a pouch on the back of the female in which the eggs develop, and it is interesting to find that in some species what come out are ordinary tadpoles, while in other species the young emerge as miniatures of their parents.

_Nototrema_ the eggs are developed in a dorsal pouch of the skin of the female, and within this pouch the respiration of the embryo is carried on by a membranous expansion of the second and third external gills on each side.

The only exceptions are Pipa, Nototrema, Opisthodelphys, and the Hylodes before referred to.

The female of a peculiar American Tree-Frog (Nototrema marsupiatum) has a pouch extending over the whole of the back and opening posteriorly.
