In just the last 12 years, six large mammal species were discovered in the hotspot, five of them in the Annamite Mountains: the saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis, EN), large-antlered muntjac (Muntiacus vuquangensis), Annamite muntjac (M. truongsonensis), grey-shanked douc (Pygathrix cinerea) and Annamite striped rabbit (Nesolagus timminsi).
