• noun A little fruit-fly, Drosophila ampelophila, of the family Drosophilidæ, which lays its eggs in overripe apples and other fruit, and especially swarms around cider-mills. See cut under fruit-fly.
• noun A trypetid fly (Trypeta pomonella) whose larva, known as the apple-maggot or railroad-worm, infests apples in the northeastern United States. See cut under Trypeta.
