- Noting stars having spectra like those of
γArgus and ζPuppis (the stars shown in the figure of the constellation on page 305, the former () on the deck a little forward of the mast, the latter () north of it and just overboard). These spectra are characterized by the predominance of the two series of hydrogen lines. They are considered by Lockyer to be the hottest of all stars, and some of them show bright lines.
