- n. A genus of plants, type of family Basellaceæ. It contains only one species, B. rubra, a very variable annual or biennial climbing herb, which is cultivated in the tropics as a pot-herb. It is a native of tropical Asia and Africa, and is commonly known as Malabar nightshade (which see).
