Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • A family of African sturnoid passerine birds, the oxpeckers, beef-eaters, or pique-bœufs: so called because they alight upon the backs of cattle to eat the parasites which infest the hides of these animals. The family is not well marked, and is often referred to the Sturnidæ.
