  1. from Greek καταλλακτικός, easy to reconcile, but taken in its literal sense of ‘changeable, having to do with exchange,’ from *κατάλλακτος, verbal adjective of καταλλάσσ, σ1ειν, change (money), exchange, also reconcile, from κατά, down, against, + ἀλλάσσ, σ1ειν, change, from ἀλλος—L. alius, other: see else.
