  • noun The line on an indicator-diagram from a steam or other engine which is traced by the pencil or point of the instrument when the pressure in the cylinder is that existing when the exhaust-valve is open and the engine-piston is making its return stroke with the driving steam in that end of the cylinder which is not connected with the indicator.
