• A suborder or an order of teleost fishes, having the shoulder-girdle disconnected from the side of the cranium and at most impinging upon the back of the cranium at the nape or nuchal region, and the coracoid bones and actinosts normally developed. It includes fishes of the families Synodontidæ, Scopelidæ, Chauliodontidæ, Alepisauridæ, Sternoptychidæ, and a number of others.
