  • noun In the polyplacophorous Mollusca, or chitons, a projection of the inner orporcellanous shell-layer (articulamentum) beyond the margin of the plates into the girdle or flexible band which holds the plates together. Insertion-plates serve the function of binding the valves firmly to the girdle.
