  • noun A low, spiny bush of the dogbane family, Arduina Carandas, much cultivated in India for its edible fruits. These are pale-green when young, white and pink when approaching maturity, and nearly black when ripe. The unripe fruit is astringent and is then only made into pickles, while when ripe it has a pleasant acid taste and is always eaten uncooked.
