  • noun A pale yellow crystalline compound, (OH)3-C6H2.CO.C6H3(OH)2 + H20; protocatechuphloroglucinol. It occurs in yellow-wood, Morus tinctoria (or Maclura aurantiaca). When boiled with concentrated caustic potash or when heated with dilute sulphuric acid to 120° C., it yields phloroglucinol and protocatechuic acid. It loses its water of crystallization at 130° C. and melts at 200° C. See morintannic acid.
