• noun A pale yellow crystalline compound, (OH)₃-C₆H₂.CO.C₆H₃(OH)₂ + H₂0; protocatechuphloroglucinol. It occurs in yellow-wood, Morus tinctoria (or Maclura aurantiaca). When boiled with concentrated caustic potash or when heated with dilute sulphuric acid to 120° C., it yields phloroglucinol and protocatechuic acid. It loses its water of crystallization at 130° C. and melts at 200° C. See morintannic acid.
