  • A family of monocotyledonous plants of the order Liliales, the bunch-flower family, typified by the genus Melanthium (which see). It is included by many authors in the Liliaceæ, but is distinguished from it mainly by the septicidal capsule and the absence of bulbs. The family includes the hellebore, the bellwort, the bogasphodel, and the blazing-star or devil's-bit.
