1. n. A subfamily of insectivorous mammals of the family Talpidæ. There is no accessory carpal ossicle, the clavicle and humerus are moderately long, the manubrium sterni is moderate, and the scapula has a metacromion, the fore limbs being thus fitted for simple progression, not specially fossorial. The incisors are fewer than in any other Talpidæ, being 2 in each upper and lower half-jaw, or 2 in each upper and 1 in each lower half-jaw. The group contains the genera (or subgenera) Myogale, Galeospalax, Scaptonyx, Uropsilus, Urotrichus, and Neurotrichus, all but the last confined to the Old World. They are known as desmans, musk-moles, and musk-shrews. Galemyinæ is a synonym. Also Mygalina.
