Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • noun A soft pasty mass obtained by mixing a solution of alum with one of soap, the precipitate consisting of aluminium salts of the fatty acids, chiefly oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids. It is dissolved in mineral oil to form an oil-thickener, used to increase the viscidity of mineral lubricating-oil. The real value of the factitious viscidity thus given to lubricants is doubtful.
