  • noun In Nitzseh's system of classification, as edited by Burmeister in 1840, an order of birds, instituted for the reception of the Macrochires, Cuculinæ, Picinæ, Psittacinæ, and Amphibolæ of his earlier arrangement, with the addition of the Caprimulginæ, Todidæ, and Lipoglossæ (the last consisting of the genera Buceros, Upupa, and Alcedo).

  • noun plural (Zoöl.) An extensive division of birds which includes the woodpeckers, toucans, trogons, hornbills, kingfishers, motmots, rollers, and goatsuckers. By some writers it is made to include also the cuckoos, swifts, and humming birds.
