  • noun In wood ship-building, a plate or bar fitted on the side and forming an extension downward of the chain-plate. Together with the chain-plate, it is bolted at its upper end through the side of the vessel by a chain-bolt and at its lower end it is bolted through the side by a preventer-bolt.
