  • noun A cultivated variety of the common red clover, Trifolium pratense, with dark-brown or purplish foliage. Also purplewort.
  • noun A slender, branching, rather low grass, Pappophorum Wrightii, with dense spike-like purple or lead-colored panicles, found in the southwestern United States and adjacent Mexico. It is reported to be fully as nutritious as grama or buffalo-grass and to be preferred by horses and mules.
