The date happens to fall on a late Fall day that is almost always dreary, cold and somber with old legionaires among those gathered around town cenotaphs, often with tears in their eyes as the speeches are read, hymns are sung, a bugler plays the "Last Post", and the whine of the bagpipes fills the air - all quite different than the parades and bunting and barbecues and razamataz of US summertime Memorial Day events.
