Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • noun A genus of batrachians, of the family Engystomatidæ, or made type of the family Rhinodermatidæ. R. darwini of Chili has an enormous brood-pouch, formed by the extension of a gular sac along the ventral surface beneath the integument, in which the young are retained for a time, giving rise to a former belief that the animal is viviparous. As many as 10 or 15 young with the legs well developed have been found in the pouch.
