1. n. A genus of polypetalous plants, of the order Violarieæ and tribe Violeæ, with flowers similar to the type as seen in the violet in the enlarged and spurred lower petals, the peculiar membranous dilatation of the anther-connectives, and the spur upon the two lower anthers, but distinguished by the very unequal sepals. The 2 species are natives, one of Brazil, the other of Mexico, and are erect shrubs with alternate leaves and solitary flowers in the axils. S. parviflora of Brazil is in cultivation as a greenhouse evergreen under the name of tongue-violet (so called from the shape of its white flowers).
