  • noun A family of acanthopterygian fishes, typified by the genus Serranus, related to the Percidæ and by most ichthyologists united with that family, and containing about 40 genera and 300 species of carnivorous fishes of all warm seas, many of them known as groupers, sea-bass, rockfish, etc.
