  • noun In topographical mapping, a method of representing the relief or vertical irregularities of the topographical surveys mapped by representing the shadows (caused by an imaginary source of illumination situated at one side) east by the mountains and other vertical irregularities. The method is an alternative of the methods of vertical lighting and of horizontal contours.
