  • I went into a shop to buy a phone card for use in making long distance calls. Now, shop assistants have their bad days now and then and that's understandable. I'm not sure how to categorise this encounter: -

Me: What kinds of international phone cards to you have?

Girl: Depends where you'll be calling to. Some cards have better rates to particular countries.

Me: I call Europe a lot.

Girl: *frowns* That's in Britain, isn't it?

  • *stunned* Wow, we usually only hear about these kinds of gaffes made by Americans and touted as some kind of evidence that our civilization is failing. I had no idea, based on what I've been led to believe, that some people in Europe might also have questionable geographical skills. That said, bilby... is it possible she misheard the word "Europe" and thought it was a similar-sounding...? Well. I guess "Europe" does sound pretty distinctive...

  • This was in Australia last year. I'm sure she heard it properly because as she was frowning she was running her finger down a list of countries under 'E'.

A powerhouse of Australian boganism is on display in this hilarious Drambuie thing.

  • Wow... that's some video. Brought back some real memories. It's particularly funny since Australia was where I was when I first heard about Drambuie--someone I knew there LOVED the stuff. Huh.

Edit: Suggest, bilby, adding the link to that Drambuie thing on the page for bogan or boganism. I'd do it, but it's kind of yours so it wouldn't be very nice of me. :)
