  • A system for measuring the degree of ice coverage of polar seas, in units called balls. One ball equals 10% coverage. Invented by Russian naval officer N. N. Zhubov.

  • This isn't made up? How many Zhubov's balls do we have today?

  • I'm researching the origins of the Zhubov scale for a book.

Can anyone give me the full name and maybe the rank of N. N. Zhubov, and the exact dates (not just the years) and place of his birth and death? I also need any details on his life and how and why he came up with this scale, and why, for heaven's sake, "balls?" instead of, say, ice cubes?

I also welcome ideas for where to search........
