• noun a recent school of fiction which comprises works describing, with a sufficient use of dialect, the lives of the homely people of Scotland. The name alludes to the Scottish song, “There grows a bonnie brier-bush in our kailyard,” from which John Watson (“Ian Maclaren”) took the title of a series of short stories (“Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush”), in 1894.
