  • A great group or subkingdom of cryptogamic plants (also called by Engler the Embryophyta asiphonogama), embracing the Bryophyta (mosses and liverworts) and Pteridophyta (ferns and fern allies), and made coördinate with the Embryophyta siphonogama (phanerogams, spermatophytes). Generation is by means of antheridia and archegonia. Called Archegoniata by Sachs.
