  • A term from the 1800s where 'amateur' players began to claim compensation for time away from work to travel to and play in matches. This was a forerunner of full professionalism. It related originally to soccer but as rules and definitions of 'football' were fluid for decades before codified rules it is relevant to the early days of most versions of football.
