  • Caspian Wimblewether, fondly known as "Manfred," passed away several months ago while I was on hiatus from Wordie. I thought you all would want to know.

He flung himself out of his little aquarium over the weekend and shrivelled up on the floor.

I felt terrible about it, even though he wasn't my fish (and Office Fish owner was considering putting a screen over the top), but he was in my charge while said Office Fish caretaker was on vacation.

He is survived by... well, everyone else in the office is fine.

  • My sincere condolences over your loss.

    October 22, 2007

  • Did he leave a note?

    October 23, 2007

  • Wasn't he the Secretary of Defence under Reagan?

    October 23, 2007

  • Haha, that was Caspar Weinberger, but you have to wonder...

    October 23, 2007

  • Well, the name was chosen for its initials. I thought yarb's comment was hilarious, whether it was intentionally jokeful or not. ;)

  • I was only little in the early 1980's, when Caspar was in the news and his pomp, but for some reason his name lodged firm in my memory. Now when I think of that period, his name is the first to spring to mind, before Reagan or Gorbachev or anyone.

And now the name "Caspian Wimblewether" will be sure to follow. So your late lamented fish will live on in my imagination as an emblem of the last years of the cold war as witnessed by an eight year-old boy on monochrome newscasts.

  • Wow. I'm touched!

You know, I actually remember Caspar Weinberger's name very clearly, also. (But nobody nicknamed him "Manfred," like we (I) did with Caspian.) Also Tip O'Neill, for some reason. Never figured that one out...

In the interest of full disclosure, it wasn't my fish. He was the Office Fish. But I will always be sad that he perished while he was my charge.

    October 23, 2007

  • Oh, my. I didn't send a card. My apologies to the owner of the fish.
