  • A family of the order Hemiptera, founded by Leach in 1818 upon the Fabrician genus Cercopis, characterized by prominent front of head, two conspicuous ocelli, six-sided or trapezoidal prothorax truncate in front, membranous apical area and thick or leathery basal area of wing-covers, stout legs, and one or two stout teeth on hind tibiæ.
