Not for me - the art lady when I was in kindergarten would yell at you for going outside the lines, not coloring darkly enough and using the "wrong" color (purple Christmas bells were not allowed).
Coloring makes me nervous.

trivet, I had a teacher like that, too. We had to make papier-mâché dinosaurs for a diorama and I painted my dinosaur purple with yellow spots (this was way pre-Barney) because my reasoning was that since no one had ever seen a dinosaur, who was to say what color they were. I wanted to paint with pretty bright concord grape purple instead of brown and grey like the other kids. Even though my dinosaur was structurally the best one, my teacher made me paint over it in a "normal" color or else he would not allow it in the Open House diorama for all the parents to admire.

Good grief. What was with those people? I had a grade-school teacher who insisted I spell my name incorrectly because she thought that was the way it should be spelled. Fortunately, Mom the Protector came to my rescue, and all worked out fine.
Sounds like purple has gotten an undeservedly bad rap. I hope you both color outside the lines now, with all sorts of fanciful hues. :-)

You are all making good points. When coloring I certainly became anxious about going outside the lines or using the wrong colors. I hope trivet & Treeseed didn't have their artistic talents squelched. Sounds like reesetee survived his education without too many emotional scars.

I never got into colouring at all. Even now, I look at my daughter going at it and wonder what the attraction is. If you like making pictures, why this need for pre-drawn lines? And if you don't like making pictures, why not do something else instead? It seems to be a purely mechanical exercise, like washing the car. Wax on, wax off.
Treeseed and trivet, wow about your colouring-nazi teachers. WTF!

Yarb, you may have hit on just why coloring is such a soothing activity for me: It's almost entirely mindless. Nothing like emptying the ol' brainpan now and then.
Palooka, I wouldn't go so far as to say I survived without emotional scars. ;-)
