(1) Pronunciación en sílabas distintas de dos vocales que normalmente forman diptongo, como ru-í-na por rui-na, vi-o-le-ta por vio-le-ta. En el verso, la diéresis es considerada como licencia poética por la preceptiva tradicional.
(2) Signo ortográfico (¨) que se pone sobre la u de las sílabas gue, gui, para representar que esa letra representa un sonido que debe pronunciarse, como en vergüenza, argüir.
