From Middle English forburnen, forbrinnen, from Old English forbyrnan, forbiernan ("to burn, be consumed by fire") and forbærnan ("to cause to burn, burn up, consume by fire, be consumed"), equivalent to for- +‎ burn. Cognate with German verbrennen ("to burn up, incinerate").
