From Middle English, past participle of forolden, forealdien, from Old English forealdian ("to grow old, decay"), equivalent to for- +‎ eld. Cognate with Dutch verouderd ("outdated, obsolete, old-fashioned"), German veraltet ("outdated, obsolete, antiquated"), Swedish föråldrad ("outdated, antiquated, archaic").
