  • noun A genus of sciænoid fishes peculiar to the great fresh-water lakes and the Mississippi valley, typical of the subfamily Haplodinotinæ, represented by H. grunniens, the fresh-water drum, sheepshead, or thunder-pumper. Also called Amblodon.
