  • A family of pupiparous dipterous insects, founded by Leach in 1817, containing both winged and wingless forms, which are parasitic upon various birds and quadrupeds, infesting the plumage or pelage; the forest-flies. The species are also known as bird-ticks, sheep-ticks, etc., and one of them is a tick-fly of the horse.
