The entailed, complex metaphor of Plato's philosophy. The mind can know things because it can comprehend Idea, and the essence of things is idea, which perforce correspond (imperfectly) to it. Based on the embodied, primary metaphor "Knowing is Grasping (as if physical objects)".
Contrast Aristotle's metaphor--"Essence is Idea": The World is primary but mind can gain knowledge of it via its ideas, which perforce correspond to it.
