• noun In anc. Eng. law, the tenure of land as a benefice, either by mere permission, as in the case of the ordinary læn, where the tenant was dependent on the will of the lord, and protected only by custom, or by a writing called a book (bōk), expressing the terms of the tenure and the right of the tenant.
