  • noun In entomology, one of the prominent organs on the posterior extremity of a very few lepidopterous larvæ, from which threadlike processes can be thrust, as in the European Harpyia vinula. The caterpillars lash their sides with these threads to repel the attacks of ichneumon parasites.
